What cloud storage is available and which one should I use?

Cloud storage - as the name suggests - backs up data in a cloud so that it can be easily accessed from multiple devices and from anywhere in the world. This simplifies team collaboration and data is less likely to be lost, such as USB sticks or external hard drives. But which cloud storage systems are actually available and which one is suitable for my purposes?

Are you looking for cloud storage and wondering which of the many providers is the right one for you? We'll give you a few tips and food for thought on what you should look out for when choosing your new cloud storage provider.

Advantages of cloud storage

Cloud storage has become indispensable in both private and business environments. The advantages are obvious:

  • Simple data exchange and easy collaboration with colleagues and external employees
  • Manual backups to USB sticks or external hard drives are no longer necessary
  • Saves storage space on PC, mobile phone and tablet
  • Worldwide availability of your data
  • Often flexibly scalable storage capacities and short contract terms
  • Easy to use - use via web browser or corresponding apps (depending on the provider)

Which cloud storage providers are available and which is the best?

When looking for a cloud storage provider, it's hard to avoid the best-known ones. Dropbox, Apple iCloud, Microsoft OneDrive, Google Drive and others are some well-known cloud storage providers that you are sure to have come across before. But what other good alternatives are there and what should you look out for when choosing?

To help you decide which cloud storage provider is best for you, you should consider what needs the cloud should fulfil and whether you have any special preferences. Storage space and price are often the most important criteria when choosing the right cloud storage provider. Then there are additional functions such as Office applications and the option of collaborative working. In addition to the top dogs on the market such as Dropbox, Apple iCloud, Microsoft OneDrive, Google Drive and others, there are providers such as Nextlcoud, pCloud, leitzcloud or luckycloud, which score very well in the ratings on relevant portals.

What should I look out for when choosing a cloud storage provider?

Depending on what data you want to store on your cloud storage, it is worth considering a provider with a server location in Germany or at least within the EU. Especially if you manage sensitive data. Always keep the GDPR in mind. Other security features such as end-to-end encryption can also be advantageous.

Zamadama relies on Nextcloud for online storage

We at Zamadama & SpaceNet AG have opted for the Nextcloud product as our cloud storage. Nextcloud Hub is the leading open source software when it comes to storing data in the cloud. It is particularly important to us and to Nextcloud itself that the data is transmitted in encrypted form and can also be stored in encrypted form if desired, so that users retain data sovereignty at all times.

We have been offering managed Nextcloud systems on our secure servers in Munich for some time now and, as a Nextcloud Gold Partner, are happy to be your point of contact when it comes to your new cloud storage. Optional functions such as the Office package, Talk and Groupware round off the range of services for Nextcloud use in your company.
