Based on open source software - Zamadama is transparent, secure & flexible

What does open source actually mean - and what are the advantages of using open source software? Find out more in this article.

Open source: a definition

The term "open source" was created in 1998 by the Open Source Initiative and stands for a working model that relies on cooperation and decentralised organisation. It is primarily used in software development: knowledge is shared within the developer community so that problems can be solved jointly and software can be further developed and improved together.

The source code is freely accessible and can be used by anyone for (almost) any purpose. No licence fees are charged, but it is possible, for example, that software collections and support are associated with costs.

Zamadama is based on the globally proven open source software Zimbra and has been further developed by SpaceNet and extended with a number of important (security) tools and functions.

The advantages of open source

Open source software offers many advantages. The source code is available free of charge because, unlike commercial software, no licence fees are payable.

Transparency and security

Open source code fulfils the requirements for transparency, code reviews and security audits and enables companies to implement extremely secure communication solutions.

Open source enables extensibility and opens up many integration options - regardless of the manufacturer.

Depending on the underlying licence, companies can adapt open source software to their needs (or have it adapted) in order to find tailor-made solutions. There is also no risk of vendor lock-in, which makes it difficult to switch to another product or provider at a later date.

Contributions from the open source community improve the products.

An important advantage lies in the usually very committed developer community: as many independent developers work together on the code and review it continuously, errors and security gaps are often found and eliminated quickly. This has a positive effect on the quality, stability and security of the software.

Why open source - an overview

  • No dependence on one manufacturer
  • Transparency through insight into the source code
  • Easy expandability - open standards and file formats
  • Software can be flexibly adapted to your own needs
  • Fast and efficient bug fixing - swarm intelligence and attention from the community
  • High security - the code can be easily checked by the community for vulnerabilities or backdoors
  • More cost-effective development - cost sharing through task sharing within open source projects
  • Less development effort through the use of OSS components
  • Faster innovation - not all parts of software need to be rewritten
  • Flexibility - companies can try out different solutions without cost risk

It doesn't always have to be Microsoft 365 or Google!

Unlike competitors with closed platforms, Zamadama relies on open source and is therefore secure, flexible and expandable.

And if you can't or don't want to do without your Outlook or Apple Mail - no problem. Synchronising with your Zamadama is very easy.
